Toilet Replacement Gold Coast

The old suite comes out and the new one goes in. If the toilet only runs or rocks, a toilet repair may be all it needs. Repair or replace: we tell you which.

Replacing a toilet

Replacing a toilet in the same position is usually a straightforward job. The old pan and cistern come out, the waste connection is checked, a new seal is fitted, and the new suite goes in and is tested. It becomes a bigger job if the floor under the old pan is damaged, or the new toilet needs its waste in a different place.

Moving a toilet depends on the waste pipe, which needs enough slope to reach the sewer line. A short move along the same wall is simpler than a move across the room. A move is part of wider renovation plumbing, and a bathroom renovation brings the plumber in at two stages.

When a toilet is better replaced than repaired

  • A cracked pan or cistern

A crack cannot be repaired, and it will leak.

  • Repairs that keep coming back

When one fault follows another, a new suite is the better spend.

  • A suite you want to change

A different style, a different flush or a different position in the room.

  • A renovation under way

The toilet is replaced as part of the new bathroom.

  • Parts that are no longer made

A repair cannot go ahead if there is nothing to repair it with.

What to settle before we arrive

  • Choose the toilet first

Each product has its own measurements, and the waste position decides whether it fits.

  • Keep the specification sheet and the box

We work from the manufacturer's installation instructions.

  • Tell us if it moves

A new position means new waste pipework, and possibly work on the floor.

  • Tell us if it is the only toilet

So we know the job cannot wait for a convenient day.

Is it the only toilet in the house?

Tell us when you call, so we know it cannot wait for a convenient day. If a pipe is leaking and the water will not stop, that is emergency plumbing.

Replacing a toilet: common questions

In the same position, usually not. The old suite comes out, the waste connection is checked and a new seal fitted, and the new one goes in and is tested. It grows if the floor is damaged or the waste has to move. We tell you which it is before we start.

Generally yes, as long as it suits the job. Toilets sold for use in Australia should carry WaterMark certification, which shows they are approved for connection to the water supply. Check the specification sheet for the waste position and connection sizes before you buy, and keep the box and the instructions for installation day.

Usually, but the waste pipe decides how far. A toilet needs a large waste pipe with enough slope to reach the sewer line, so a short move along the same wall is simpler than a move across the room. On a concrete slab, a move can mean cutting the slab to reroute the waste.

Not when it is like-for-like. The QBCC treats replacing an existing fixture, where the water supply and drainage do not need to change, as minor work. Moving a toilet is different, and the QBCC lists relocating fixtures as notifiable work.

Repair it when the pan and cistern are sound and the fault is a part, such as a valve, a seal or the flush mechanism. Replace it when either is cracked, or when repairs keep coming back. We tell you which applies before any work starts.

Mainly whether it stays where it is. A like-for-like swap reuses the existing connections. Moving it means new waste pipework and possibly work on the floor. The condition of the floor under the old pan and the type of suite matter too. You get a written price before we start.
