Vesey Plumbing Solutions installs, repairs and certifies gas appliances and pipework across the Gold Coast, Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. Licensed gas fitter Jamie Vesey does the work and certifies it. Gas fitters need a separate gas work licence, not just a QBCC licence. Smell gas? Call 000 first.

A burner or heater will not stay lit

Usually a repair

What is usually behind it

Usually a small safety part that senses the flame has worn out, so it shuts the gas off as it is meant to. If more than one appliance is struggling, it can be the supply instead, such as a gas line too small for everything on it. If the appliance is a hot water system, see hot water systems.

What you can do now

Notice whether it is one appliance or several, and whether it happens when everything is on at once. Tell us when you call. It tells us where to start.

We are fitting out a commercial kitchen

Worth planning early

What it involves

Every burner, oven and fryer adds to the gas the kitchen draws, and the line from the meter has to carry all of it at once. So the job starts at the meter, and the work is planned around your trading dates. It finishes with a compliance certificate.

What to have ready

The equipment list, with makes and models if you have them, the floor plan, and the dates the kitchen cannot close.

A new cooktop, oven or heater

Depends if it moves

What it involves

A new appliance in the same spot usually connects to the gas point already there. A new position, or a bigger appliance, can mean a new line, and each one needs the right space and airflow around it. The job finishes with a compliance certificate. If it is part of a kitchen renovation, the water and drainage side is renovation plumbing.

What to have ready

The make and model of the new appliance, and whether your home runs on mains gas or bottled gas. A photo of where it is going helps.

I need a gas compliance certificate

Worth planning ahead

What it involves

A compliance certificate covers gas work a licensed gas fitter has done. For a sale, a lease or an insurer, the usual path is a safety check of the gas system and appliances, then any work it turns up is done and certified.

What to have ready

Tell us who is asking for it (a buyer, a property manager or an insurer) and which gas appliances are on the property.

Switching between bottled and mains gas

Depends on the appliance

What it involves

The two gases burn at different pressures, so each appliance needs converting, usually with a kit from its maker. Some appliances have no kit and cannot be converted safely, and replacing them is the answer.

What to have ready

The make and model of every gas appliance in the house. The sticker on each one usually says which gas it is set up for.

Something else

Not on the list?

That includes a barbecue point on the deck and a new line for a pool heater.

What to do

Call and describe the job in your own words. Tell us whether it is mains gas or bottled gas if you know.

Commercial kitchen gas fit-outs

Restaurants, cafes and clubs run more gas through one kitchen than a home line is sized for.

  1. It starts at the meter

We add up every appliance you plan to run and size the line from the meter to suit, so the burner at the far end still gets enough gas when everything is on.

  2. It works around your trading

A kitchen that cannot cook cannot trade. Tell us the dates you have to stay open and we plan the job around them.

  3. It finishes with the certificate

Every appliance is run and checked, and you get the compliance certificate your landlord and insurer may ask for.

A written price. Guaranteed workmanship.

A written price before we start, and our workmanship guaranteed for as long as you own the home.

You get the price in writing before any work begins. If we find something the quote did not cover, we stop and tell you what it means before we touch it. If our workmanship ever fails, we will repair or redo the work, whichever we judge right for the job.

Some jobs cannot be quoted without opening something up. Where that is the case, we tell you before we start.

The workmanship guarantee covers the work we carry out, for as long as you own the property. Anything we supply also carries its manufacturer's warranty, and we will help you claim on it. This guarantee is in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. How to make a claim, and your consumer guarantees.

What to tell us when you call

  • What the job is

    A new appliance, a fault, a fit-out or a certificate.

  • The appliances

The make and model of each one if you have them. For a fit-out, the full equipment list.

  • Mains gas or bottled

Mains gas comes through a meter. Bottled gas comes from cylinders outside. If you are not sure, say so.

  • Home or business

For a business, the dates the kitchen cannot close.

Gas fitting questions people ask

Yes, for any appliance fixed in place. Connecting, disconnecting or altering a gas cooktop, oven, heater or gas line is licensed work in Queensland, and it is unlawful for anyone else to do it, including the homeowner. The exception is a portable appliance, such as a barbecue or a heater, plugged into an existing bayonet point. Installed work also has to be certified, and only a licensed gas fitter can do that.

A gas compliance certificate is the document a licensed gas fitter issues stating that completed gas work meets the standard. One is required for any new installation or alteration. You may be asked for it when you sell or lease the property, and your insurer may ask for it if there is ever an incident. Keep it with the property records.

Only if they also hold a gas fitting licence. Plumbing and gas fitting are separate licence classes, and a plumbing licence on its own does not authorise gas work, so it is worth asking before you book. The same job also has to satisfy the appliance clearances and the ventilation requirements, which a benchtop supplier will not have checked.

The line is pressure tested with a manometer connected at the test point. The system is brought up to pressure and held for a set period, and a pressure that drops means gas is escaping somewhere. How fast it drops indicates the size of the leak. A leak detection solution or an electronic detector then locates it along the run. If you can smell gas, do not wait for a test: call 000 or your gas supplier's emergency number, then see emergency plumbing.

Manufacturers set their own service intervals, and an appliance that works hard, such as a gas heater running through winter, needs looking at more often. A service covers the burner, the flame, the ventilation and the flue. The flue matters most on a heater, because a blocked or corroded one is how carbon monoxide gets into a room.

Sometimes. Many appliances can be converted with a manufacturer conversion kit, which changes the injectors and the regulator settings, because the two gases burn at different pressures. Some appliances have no kit available and cannot be converted safely. Either way the conversion is licensed work, and the appliance has to be recommissioned and certified afterwards.

A burner that lights and then drops out is usually a thermocouple or flame sensor fault: the safety device is not registering the flame, so it shuts the gas off as designed. It can also be a supply problem, particularly an undersized line or an appliance at the far end of a long run. A pressure test tells the two apart.

The equipment list is the starting point: every gas appliance you plan to run, with makes and models if you have them. Each one has a gas rating, and together they decide the size of the line from the meter. A floor plan with the equipment positions, where the gas meter is, and the dates the kitchen has to stay open let us price the job and plan it around trading.
