Gas compliance certificates: what they are and when you are asked

A gas compliance certificate is the document a licensed gas fitter issues stating that completed gas work meets the standard. One is required for any new installation or alteration. You may be asked for it when you sell or lease the property, and your insurer may ask for it if there is ever an incident.

Only a licensed gas fitter can issue one for gas work. Jamie Vesey is a licensed plumber and gas fitter. It is part of our wider gas fitting, and it goes with the work in gas appliance installation. If you can smell gas at any point, leave and call 000 or your gas supplier first.

When people ask for one

  • A property sale

A buyer, agent or solicitor wants to see the gas paperwork.

  • A new lease or a rental

A property manager or landlord asks for it.

  • An insurer

Asked for if there is ever an incident, so it is worth keeping.

  • New gas work

Any new installation or alteration needs one when it is finished.

  • A commercial kitchen

A fit-out or refit is certified when it is finished.

What to have ready when you call

  • Who is asking, and for what

A buyer, a property manager or an insurer, and what they have asked for.

  • The gas appliances at the property

Cooktop, oven, heater or hot water, and whether they run on mains or bottled gas.

  • Any paperwork you already hold

Earlier certificates are worth keeping with the property records.

  • The dates that matter

A settlement or a lease start, so we plan around it.
