Double marble vanity with backlit mirrors in a completed bathroom renovation

Bathroom and Kitchen Renovation Plumbing Gold Coast

The pipes go in before the tiles, so they have to be right. We set them out against the fixtures you have chosen, including any new hot water system, and check them before anything covers them.

Vesey Plumbing Solutions does bathroom, kitchen and renovation plumbing across the Gold Coast, Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm. Licensed plumber Jamie Vesey does the work and gives you a written price before starting. The QBCC lists moving or adding fixtures as notifiable work.

What are you planning?

We are renovating and moving things around

New pipework

What it involves

Anything that moves needs new water and waste pipes to its new spot. They go in after the old room is stripped out and before the walls are lined, then we come back after tiling to connect everything. The waste pipes decide how far a toilet or shower can move, because they need a slope to drain.

What to have ready

Choose your toilet, vanity, shower and taps before the pipes go in, and keep the specification sheets. Each one sets its own pipe heights and positions. A rough sketch of where things are now and where they are going helps too.

Renovating, but keeping everything where it is

Usually a straight swap

What it involves

Keeping the layout means the new fixtures can usually use the pipes already there, as long as they are in good condition. With the walls open, it is the easiest time to check them, and to replace old pipe rather than tile over it.

What to have ready

Choose the new fixtures early and check they suit what is there. A wall-mounted mixer or a toilet with the cistern hidden in the wall needs different pipes to the one it replaces, even in the same spot.

We need a new toilet

Usually a straight swap

What it involves

In the same spot, the old toilet comes out, the connection to the waste pipe is checked and resealed, and the new one goes in and gets tested. It becomes a bigger job if the floor under the old one is damaged, or the new toilet joins the waste pipe in a different place. If the toilet only runs or rocks, a toilet repair may be all it needs.

What to have ready

Send us a photo of the old toilet and the floor around it, and the specification sheet for the new one if you have picked it. Toilets join the waste pipe in different positions, and a close match saves work.

New taps or a new vanity

Usually a straight swap

What it involves

In the same spot, new taps or a new vanity usually connect to the pipes already there. It grows when the new one works differently: a mixer on the wall where the tap used to sit on the basin, or a vanity with its basin in a different place.

What to have ready

Look up the specification sheet before you buy, and check the taps carry the WaterMark, which shows they are approved for connecting to the water supply in Australia.

A new kitchen, or the sink moving

Depends if the sink moves

What it involves

If the sink stays where it is, the new one connects to the pipes already there. Moving it, or adding a dishwasher or a fridge with a water line, means new pipes run before the cabinets go in. A gas cooktop is gas fitting, which is a separate job.

What to have ready

Ask your kitchen designer for the layout with the sink, dishwasher and fridge marked on it, and have it ready before any cabinets are fitted.

The plumbing is the part of a renovation you cannot redo later

Once the tiles are down, moving a pipe means lifting them. So the plumbing goes in first.

  1. You

    Choose the fixtures

Pick the toilet, vanity, shower and taps first. Their specification sheets decide where every pipe goes.

  2. Other trades

    The old room comes out

Once the walls and floor are open, the existing pipes can be checked. Old or corroded pipe is easiest to replace now.

  3. Plumber, first visit

New pipes to the new positions

Water and waste pipes are run while the room is open, then checked for leaks before anything covers them.

  4. Other trades

    Walls lined, waterproofed and tiled

The room gets closed up over pipes that have already been tested.

  5. Plumber, second visit

    Everything connected

The toilet, basin, shower and taps go on and are run and checked.

Only swapping a fixture? Most of this does not apply. The old one comes out and the new one goes in where it was, once the existing connections have been checked.

“Can’t recommend Jamie enough for our bathroom renovation. We got quotes from a few plumbers around the Gold Coast and he was upfront about pricing from the start, no surprises when the final bill came through. Turned up on time every day, kept the site clean, and walked us through each stage so we always knew what was happening and why.”

What to have ready when you book

  • The fixtures you have chosen

The specification sheets for the toilet, vanity, shower and taps. They decide where the pipes go.

  • Photos of the room now

A few wide shots of the room as it is, and the space under the sink or vanity.

  • What the floor is

A concrete slab or a raised timber floor. It changes how a waste pipe reaches a new position.

  • Who else is on the job

Your builder, tiler or kitchen company, and roughly when they are booked. The plumbing has to fit between them.

Renovation plumbing questions people ask

Yes, for any work that moves or adds water supply or drainage. Relocating a shower, toilet or vanity, or adding a new fixture, is plumbing work that has to be done by a licensed plumber in Queensland. A like-for-like swap of a tap or toilet in the same position is simpler, but it still connects to the water supply and the sewer.

Usually twice, at two stages of a bathroom renovation. The first visit comes after demolition and before the walls are lined, when the new water and waste pipes are run to their positions. The second comes after tiling, when the toilet, basin, shower and taps are connected.

Usually, but the waste pipe decides how far. A toilet needs a large waste pipe with enough slope to reach the sewer line, so moving it a short distance along the same wall is simpler than moving it across the room. On a concrete slab, a relocation can mean cutting the slab to reroute the waste.

Choose the actual fixtures and tapware before the pipes go in, not after. Wall-mounted mixers, in-wall cisterns, floor waste positions and vanity heights all decide where the pipes go, and each product has its own measurements. Having the specification sheets on site is what stops a tap landing behind a mirror.

Generally yes, as long as the products suit the job. Tapware and toilets sold for use in Australia should carry WaterMark certification, which shows they are approved for connection to the water supply. Check the specification sheet for connection sizes before buying, and keep the box and the instructions for installation day.

Replacing a toilet in the same position is usually a straightforward job. The old pan and cistern come out, the waste connection is checked and a new seal fitted, and the new suite goes in and gets tested. It becomes a bigger job if the floor under the old pan is damaged, or the new toilet needs its waste in a different place. If the toilet only runs or rocks, a toilet repair may be all it needs.

The biggest factor is how much moves. Keeping fixtures where they are reuses the existing pipes, while relocating a shower, toilet or kitchen sink means new supply and waste lines, and possibly cutting a concrete slab. The number of fixtures, access to the pipework and the condition of the existing pipes all add to it.

Sometimes, but a renovation is the easiest time to replace them. Once the walls are open, old galvanised steel or corroded copper pipe is simple to reach, and replacing it then is far less work than opening a finished, tiled wall later. Pipe in good condition can stay, which is worth checking as soon as demolition is done.
