Kitchen plumbing in a renovation

The plumbing in a kitchen is simple until something moves. Keeping the sink where it is reuses the existing pipes. Moving it means new supply and waste lines, and possibly cutting a concrete slab. We look at your plans first and tell you what each choice means for the pipework.

The work usually runs in two stages, as it does in a bathroom. The pipes are set out before the cabinets and walls are finished, then the sink, tap and appliances are connected once they are in. It is one part of our wider renovation plumbing. A new kitchen with a gas cooktop also needs gas appliance installation from a licensed gas fitter.

What we connect in a kitchen

  • Sinks and tapware

The sink, its waste and the mixer, in the old position or a new one.

  • Dishwashers

A water supply and a waste connection, positioned to suit the cabinet.

  • Fridge water lines

A supply for a fridge with a water dispenser or ice maker.

  • Waste pipework

Moved or extended when the sink moves.

  • Filter taps and under-sink units

Connected to the supply as part of the fit-off.

What to settle before the pipes go in

  • The sink and tap you have chosen

Each has its own measurements, and they decide where the pipes sit.

  • The appliances and their positions

The dishwasher and fridge decide where the supply and waste come out.

  • Whether the sink moves

It is the biggest single factor in the plumbing.

  • The cabinet plans

We work from them, so share them when you ask for a price.

Water running that you cannot stop?

If a pipe is leaking in the kitchen and the water will not stop, call us now. That is emergency plumbing. The renovation can wait for a booked visit.

Kitchen plumber FAQs

Usually twice. The first visit comes after demolition and before the walls and cabinets are finished, when the water and waste pipes are set out. The second comes once the cabinets and benchtop are in, when the sink, tap and appliances are connected. Getting the first visit right makes the second one quick.

Usually, but it means new supply and waste pipework, and possibly cutting a concrete slab. Waste pipes need enough slope to drain, so how far it can move depends on the house. We look at the plans and tell you what the move involves before we price it.

Yes. A dishwasher needs a supply and a waste connection, and a fridge with a water dispenser needs a supply line. We set both out against the cabinet plans so they sit where the appliance can reach them.

Generally yes, as long as the products suit the job. Tapware sold for use in Australia should carry WaterMark certification, which shows it is approved for connection to the water supply. Check the specification sheet for connection sizes before you buy, and keep the box and the instructions.

Usually, yes. The QBCC lists additions, extensions or renovations to kitchens as notifiable work. Your plumber registers it with the QBCC, so ask for a copy of the Form 4 once the job is finished.

A licensed gas fitter. Plumbing and gas fitting are separate licence classes, and connecting a gas cooktop is gas work. We do both, so a kitchen with a gas cooktop is one booking.

Mainly how much moves. Keeping the sink where it is reuses the existing pipes. Moving it means new supply and waste lines. The number of appliances, access to the pipework and the condition of the existing pipes all add to it. You get a written price before we start.
