What a blocked toilet usually means

A blocked toilet is stuck in one of two places: the toilet itself, or the drain it empties into. Which one it is decides the job. A blockage in the toilet is a small job. One further down the line belongs to wider blocked drains work, and it usually shows up in other fixtures too.

We clear the blockage, then work out what caused it. A toilet blocked by something that should not have been flushed is a one-off. A toilet that keeps blocking has a reason somewhere along the pipe, and we tell you what it is and whether it will come back.

Signs the toilet is blocked, or on its way

  • The bowl rises and drains slowly

    The water climbs towards the rim after a flush, then goes down far slower than it used to.

  • Gurgling from the toilet

    A gurgle when the shower, basin or washing machine drains is air being pushed back past a blockage.

  • Other drains are slow too

    When the shower or laundry is slow at the same time, the blockage is past the toilet, in the drain.

  • Water or a smell where it should not be

    Water at a floor drain, or a smell near the grate outside, after a flush.

  • The only toilet in the house is out

    It cannot wait for a convenient day, so tell us when you call.

Blocked toilet FAQs

Most blocked toilets are caused by too much paper, wipes or something that should not have been flushed. If the toilet itself is clear and it still will not drain, the blockage is further down, in the drain it empties into. Roots or a damaged pipe can be behind that, and which it is decides whether it comes back.

It is an emergency when sewage is coming up inside the house, because that is a health risk and it spreads quickly. Keep children and pets away from it and call us. It is also urgent when it is the only toilet in the house.

If only the toilet is affected, the blockage is usually in the toilet itself. If the shower, the laundry or another toilet is slow or gurgling at the same time, it is further down in the drain.

Not if it was a one-off, such as too much paper or a wipe. If it blocks again, the cause is usually further along the pipe, such as tree roots or a sagging section, and clearing the toilet is only a short-term fix. We tell you what we found and whether we expect it to return.

It is best not to. Chemical drain cleaner rarely shifts what blocks a toilet, and when it fails it sits in the bowl, where it can splash whoever clears it next. Call us instead, and tell us if you have already used any, so we can take care when we clear it.

Mainly where the blockage sits and what caused it. A blockage in the toilet itself is a smaller job. One in the drain beyond it takes more work, and a damaged pipe is a repair rather than a clearing. Whatever it turns out to be, you get a written price before we start.
