Why sinks and basins block

Sink and basin drains block because of what goes down them. Fat and food scraps build up in a kitchen sink. Hair and soap build up in a bathroom basin. Most of it collects in the trap, the bend under the fixture that holds water to keep drain smells out.

A blocked sink or basin is usually a smaller job than a main line. We clear it, then tell you whether it was a build-up in the trap or something further along the pipe. When more than one fixture is slow at once, the cause is further along and belongs to wider blocked drains work.

Signs the sink or basin drain is blocked

  • Water sits in the bowl

    Water drains far slower than it used to, or not at all.

  • A drain that gets slower over weeks

    A build-up narrows the pipe a little at a time before it blocks completely.

  • Gurgling after the water goes

    Air is being pulled past the build-up as the water drains.

  • A smell from the plughole

    Often a build-up in the trap holding on to what went down.

When it is more than the trap

  • The shower or laundry is slow too

    The blockage is past the sink, in the wider drain.

  • It keeps coming back

    A repeat blockage has a cause further along the pipe, and we tell you what it is.

Drain cleaner rarely shifts a blockage and can splash whoever works on the pipe next. If you have already used some, tell us when you call so we can take care when we clear it.

Blocked sink and basin: common questions

Fat, grease and food scraps build up in the trap and the waste pipe, and they thicken as they cool. If it blocks again soon after clearing, the build-up is further along the pipe than the trap, or the pipe itself is the problem. We tell you which it is.

Hair and soap collect in the trap and the pipe below the basin, narrowing it until the water drains slowly. If other fixtures in the bathroom are slow as well, the cause is further along, in the wider drain, and the job changes with it.

If only one sink or basin is slow, the cause is usually in its own trap or waste pipe. If the shower, the laundry or a toilet is slow at the same time, the blockage is in the wider drain.

It is best not to. Chemical drain cleaner rarely shifts a real blockage, and when it fails it sits in the pipe, where it can splash whoever clears it next. Call us instead, and tell us if you have already used some.

Sometimes. One slow sink is usually its own build-up. A sink that blocks again after being cleared, or several fixtures that are slow together, points to the pipe beyond it. We say which one yours is.
