Blocked Stormwater Drains Gold Coast

A yard pit that bubbles up, a downpipe that overflows, or water that pools against the house after rain. A yard that stays wet in dry weather is a leaking pipe instead. Cleared, and the blockage located.

Why stormwater drains block

Stormwater is the rain from your roof and yard. It runs through gutters, downpipes and underground pipes to the street or a drain at the back of the block, separate from the sewer. When any part of that path blocks, the water has nowhere to go and spills out where it should not.

Leaves and silt in the pits are the usual cause, and tree roots can get into the pipes underground. We clear the blockage and find where it was. Where the cause is not obvious, a CCTV drain inspection shows the inside of the pipe. Before the rain, run through the storm season plumbing checklist.

Signs a stormwater drain is blocked

  • A yard pit that fills or bubbles up in rain

The pipe beyond it cannot carry the water away.

  • A downpipe that overflows at a joint

With a clean gutter above it, the blockage is usually in the pipe under the ground.

  • Water pooling against the house

It has nowhere to go, and it will find its own way in.

  • The same spot floods every heavy rain

A repeat problem has a cause in the pipe, not just in the weather.

Stormwater or sewer?

Stormwater and sewer drains are separate systems, and the job differs.

  • It only happens in rain

    That points to stormwater.

  • Drains inside gurgle or smell

That points to the sewer. See sewer drain clearing.

  • The overflow relief gully is running

It is connected to the sewer, not to stormwater. Keep children and pets away from it and call us.

Stormwater drain FAQs

The pit is part of the stormwater path, and it overflows when the pipe beyond it cannot carry the water away. Silt and leaves in the pit, a blockage in the pipe or tree roots are the usual causes. We find which one, and tell you whether it needs clearing or repair.

The City of Gold Coast requires stormwater from a private property to drain to a lawful point of discharge. The gutters, downpipes, pits and pipes that carry it there from your house are on your side. A blocked street drain or damaged kerb is one to report to the council.

If a downpipe still overflows at a joint once the gutter above it is clean, the blockage is usually in the pipe under the ground. That is not something to dig for. A plumber can run a camera through the pipe to see what is in there and exactly where.

Yes. Roots get in through old joints and cracks, and they grow back through the same gap after they are cleared. If a stormwater pipe keeps blocking, a camera inspection shows whether roots are the cause and whether a section needs repair.

It is when water is coming into the house. Otherwise it is best cleared in a dry spell, before the next heavy rain, because a blocked stormwater drain tends to show itself only when it rains and gets worse the longer it is left.

Mainly where the blockage sits and what caused it. Silt in a pit is a smaller job than a blockage in the pipe underground, and a damaged pipe is a repair rather than a clearing. Whatever it turns out to be, you get a written price before we start.
