Hot Water System Replacement Gold Coast

When the tank has reached the end of it, the answer is a new system. If the fault is only a part, it may be a hot water repair instead. We help you pick the system that fits your house.

Replacing a hot water system

Replacement is the answer when the tank itself has failed: water leaking from the body of the tank, or rust in the hot water only. A tank that has corroded through cannot be repaired. Where a part has failed on a sound tank, a hot water repair is usually the smaller job.

We replace electric, gas, heat pump and solar hot water systems. Which one suits depends on the house.

In Queensland, installing or replacing a water heater is notifiable work, which your plumber registers with the QBCC. Ask for your copy of the paperwork once the job is finished.

Signs the tank is finished

  • Water under the tank itself

Water pooling under the tank, not at a pipe or a valve, means the cylinder has corroded through.

  • Rusty water from the hot tap only

If the cold tap runs clear, the rust is coming from the tank.

  • Repeat faults on an old tank

A second major repair in a short time is usually the sign.

  • Repair costs close to a new system

When parts and labour add up to a large share of a new one, the repair stops making sense.

Before you agree to a replacement

  • Get the price in writing

Including the removal of the old system.

  • Ask what type of system it is, and why

The right choice depends on your household and your house.

  • Ask what each warranty covers

The manufacturer's warranty and the installer's workmanship are different things.

  • Ask what else needs to change

Pipework, the electrical supply or the gas supply can all be affected by a different type of system.

  • Ask for the paperwork

    Once the job is finished.

Gas hot water is a job for a licensed gas fitter

Leave a gas system alone and call us. If you can smell gas, leave the house and call 000 or your gas supplier's emergency number first, then call us once you are safe. See gas fitting.

Before you replace a hot water system

When the tank has failed: water leaking from the body of the tank, or rusty water from the hot tap only. A corroded tank cannot be repaired. An old system that keeps needing repairs is the other common reason. We tell you which applies before you decide.

It depends on the house. Electric, gas, heat pump and solar systems have different install requirements, such as outdoor space for a heat pump or a gas supply for a gas unit. We look at the house and say which suits.

Yes. The QBCC lists installing or replacing water heaters, including electric, gas, solar and heat pump, as notifiable work. Your plumber registers it with the QBCC, so ask for a copy of the Form 4 once the job is finished.

Yes. Gas hot water is gas work as well as plumbing, so it needs a licensed gas fitter. The QBCC licensee guide says a plumber also needs the relevant gas licence to work on gas water heaters. Changing to or from gas can mean new line work, which is gas fitting.

Ask for the price in writing, what type of system it is and why it suits your household, and what the manufacturer's warranty and the installer's workmanship each cover. Ask whether your pipework, electrical supply or gas supply needs changes, and for the paperwork once the job is finished.

Often, if the tank is sound and the fault is a part such as an element, thermostat, valve or anode. If the tank is leaking from its body there is nothing to repair. See hot water repairs or the guide on how to repair or replace a hot water system.
