When heat pump hot water suits a house

A heat pump hot water system heats water by drawing heat from the air around it, instead of using an element or a gas burner. It is made up of a tank and a unit that does the heating, and the unit needs air to work with. So whether it suits depends on the house.

It is one of the hot water system options when a tank has reached the end of it, alongside electric, gas and solar.

How it differs from electric and gas

  • How it heats the water

An electric system uses an element and a gas system uses a burner. A heat pump moves heat from the air into the tank.

  • It needs space and air

The unit sits outdoors or somewhere with airflow, so the position matters more than it does for an electric tank.

  • It has moving parts

The unit has a fan and a compressor, so where it sits is worth thinking about, including how close it is to a bedroom.

  • It needs a power supply and a drain

The supply, the relief valve drain and the pipe run all have to suit the new unit.

What a replacement visit involves

  • Looking at the site first

Where the unit and tank will sit, and what the existing connections allow.

  • Removing the old system

It is disconnected, drained and taken out.

  • Connecting the new one

The water connections, the relief drain line and the tempering valve are fitted to suit.

  • Handling the change of type

Moving from electric or gas can mean changes to the supply. A gas line that is no longer needed is gas fitting work.

  • The paperwork

Once the job is finished, we register it with the QBCC and you can ask for a copy.

Heat pump hot water: what people ask

A hot water system that heats water by drawing heat from the surrounding air, instead of using an element or a gas burner. It is made up of a storage tank and a heating unit. Because the unit needs air around it, where it is installed matters more than it does for an electric tank.

The way it heats the water. An electric system uses an element, a gas system uses a burner, and a heat pump moves heat from the air into the tank. In practice that means it needs more space, a position with airflow and a different set of connections. We explain what that means for your house.

It depends on the site. The unit needs room and airflow, a power supply, and a drain for the relief valve, and it has a fan and a compressor, so the position matters. We look at where it would go and tell you plainly if another type suits the house better.

The old system is disconnected and removed, and the new one is connected to the water, the relief drain line and the tempering valve. A change from electric or gas can mean changes to the supply as well. We explain what your job needs before we start.

Yes. The QBCC lists installing or replacing water heaters, including heat pump, as notifiable work. Your plumber registers it with the QBCC, so ask for a copy of the Form 4 once the job is finished.

Yes. The plumbing side is our hot water work, and a gas line that is no longer needed is gas fitting, which needs a licensed gas fitter. Jamie Vesey is both, so it is one booking. If you ever smell gas, leave and call 000 or your gas supplier first.

Repair it when the tank is sound and a part has failed. Replace it when the tank itself has failed. We say which applies to yours. See how to repair or replace a hot water system.
